Highway musings

whizzing past exit towns

on a long stretch of bleak highway

the effect largely indifference

where there used to be wonder, anticipation

now it’s an endless road

asphalt always damp with rain or fog

steam

if we’re lucky

I’ve always had a fascination with exit towns

fluorescents illuminating tanks

that hold the key to leave

the shadow of the Golden Arches

I wonder why it seems nobody ever does

pull off, grab a pack of nabs and a soda

exit faster than I arrived

the bleak road now cradling me back to comfort
